Mining Management Permits by Religious Organizations Reap Polemics

Jakarta, 5 June 2024 - The granting of permits to religious community organizations (ormas) to manage special mining business permit (WIUPK) areas is in the public spotlight. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) explained this regulation by emphasizing that permits are given to business entities under the auspices of mass organizations, not directly to the mass organizations themselves.

"What was given was once again business entities in mass organizations," said Jokowi while in the capital city of the archipelago (IKN), East Kalimantan, Wednesday (5/6/2024). Jokowi also emphasized that the requirements for obtaining this permit are very strict, both for cooperatives and companies affiliated with religious mass organizations. "The requirements are also very strict, whether given to cooperatives in mass organizations or perhaps PTs and others," he explained.

The Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK), Siti Nurbaya, also explained the considerations behind granting this permit. According to him, mass organizations have organizational wings that are capable of managing business professionally. "Organizations have organizational wings. Community organizations, including political parties, also have business wings. So what is meant by licensing is in the business wing. So they are still truly professional," said Siti to journalists at the Presidential Palace complex, Central Jakarta, Sunday (2/6/2024).

Siti added that it is better for mass organizations to run their business professionally rather than continually submitting proposals for funding. "Mass organizations are considering this because there are organizational wings that make it possible. Instead of the mass organizations every day looking for proposals to ask for, what is it called submitting a proposal, it would be better to have a business wing that is neat and remains professional. That's the truth," said Siti.

Apart from that, Siti emphasized the importance of making humans productive as part of fulfilling human rights. He gave an example of how social forests are given to the people to ensure productivity. "The Constitution says that it is a human right for humans to be productive. So spaces for people's productivity, whatever the channel, should be provided. So there is a social forest given to the people. For example, what will happen to the officers under the command? "Poor people should also be considered because being productive is the people's right, that's what the state must pay attention to," explained Siti.

This decision triggered various reactions from the public and stakeholders, who questioned the impact and implementation of this policy in the field.
